Collaborative Research from Unpad, Unsyiah, and Unimal Scholars on Figurative Expressions as a Language of Protection in Acehnese Culture
The Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran, is excited to share a collaborative research publication titled “Figurative expressions in Acehnese pregnancy cultural taboos as a language protection” in the Indonesian Journal of Applied Linguistic (Vol. 15, No. 1, 2025). The article was penned by Khalsiah (Universitas Malikussaleh), Yunisrina Qismullah Yusuf (Universitas Syiah Kuala), Cece Sobarna (Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran), Ima Indirayani, Diana Fauzia Sari, and Azkiya (Universitas Syiah Kuala).
A recent study offers a fascinating look into how cultural beliefs surrounding pregnancy in Aceh are communicated through figurative language. Conducted in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar, the research reveals a complex system of traditional prohibitions deeply embedded in community values. The study highlights the intricate connection between a society’s language, cultural beliefs, and health practices.
The study found 34 cultural prohibitions related to pregnancy, covering everything from diet to spiritual beliefs. These taboos are reinforced using powerful figurative language. The most common device is metonymy, linking a specific action to a broader outcome for the baby. Other figurative devices are also used to emphasize these beliefs. Hyperbole exaggerates the potential consequences to stress the seriousness of the taboo. Personification attributes human qualities to spirits, making the prohibitions’ spiritual significance more tangible.
This research shows how language acts as a guardian of cultural heritage. It proves that the words used to describe pregnancy taboos are carefully constructed to protect the mother and child. The study is a powerful reminder of how language and tradition work together to guide and preserve communities.
The findings of this collaborative study are highly impactful for the field of linguistics and cultural studies, while promoting greater academic cooperation among Universitas Padjadjaran, Universitas Malikussaleh, and Universitas Syiah Kuala.
