“Halo, Bu Dekan” – Sexual Violence Complaint Service Initiated by FIB Unpad

Faculty of Cultural Sciences Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad) launched a sexual harrassment complaint service on campus, “Halo, Bu Dekan” (Hello Mrs. Dean). The service was officially introduced on Monday, April 4, 2022. “Halo Bu Dekan” is a preventive and curative service for victims of sexual harassment or violence. Witnesses or victims of sexual violence may report incidents through FIB’s official WhatsApp channel at 0821 1616 2020. Vice Dean for Learning, Student Affairs, and Research at Faculty of Cultural Sciences Unpad, Lina Meilinawati Rahayu, elaborates that the program was created to facilitate victims of sexual violence to feel safe when reporting. Over the past month, Lina reported that FIB received a number of complaints from victims of sexual harassment or violence whose incidents had been going on for quite a long time. Victims or survivors are usually reluctant to report because they are worried and anxious about their cases being exposed to the public. “Victims are reluctant to report, maybe because they are afraid or embarrassed too. It really does take courage to report such things,” Lina explained to Tempo on Monday, April 4. Before “Halo Bu Dekan” was formed, Lina claimed that FIB had previously formed an anti-sexual harassment and violence task force. FIB has also bridged complaints through the Student Executive Board via telephone or through written submissions. FIB Dean, Aquarini Priyatna, a feminist activist and also part of the Center for Gender and Child Research, often engaged in discussions with the task force to address the issue and take further actions. From these forums, Lina stated that FIB recognized the need for a special channel for safe complaints for victims of sexual violence. “We feel this channel is very urgent. Through “Halo Bu Dekan”, victims can complain at any time via WhatsApp, which is easy to access and remember 0821-1616-2020,” explained Lina. Victims can report directly by describing the chronology of events through the WhatsApp channel through the number above. When reporting, victims or witnesses can mention names, initials, or not mention names if they decide not to. “You may list out the chronology and state who the perpetrator is. Do include evidence if there is so.” she added. If the complaint has sufficient supporting evidence, the report will be followed up by a task force consisting of the FIB board, two lecturers, two teaching staff, and two student representatives. As for the safety of the complainant, Lina guarantees the security of their personal data. She noted that only faculty leaders who are committed to eradicating sexual violence have access to the WhatsApp messages of complaints. “We guarantee it is safe,” she stated. Lina elaborated that the campus strongly condemns all acts of sexual violence. Unpad, she claimed, supports the Ministry of Education’s regulation Number 30 of 2021 concerning Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence in Higher Education. Unpad has also issued a chancellor’s regulation to handle this matter. “With this regulation, we have the strength to not hesitate to take firm action against perpetrators of sexual harassment or violence,” she urged. Understanding the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Through the Perspective of Political Psychology

Jatinangor, May 23, 2024 – Public lecture “The Current Situation of the Israel-Palestinian Conflict: From the Perspective of Political Psychology” was held by Faculty of Psychology Universitas Padjadjaran in a hybrid setting at S-3 Conference Room Building 1 Fapsi Unpad, Jatinangor, Sumedang, on Tuesday (21/5). This activity received attention from several faculties of Unpad, one of which is the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB). In this public lecture, Fapsi Unpad invited former Indonesian Ambassador (one of them for the European Union, Belgium, and Luxemburg) and alumnus of Fapsi Unpad, Nadjib Riphat Kesoema. This activity was opened by the coordinator of the Political Psychology course of Fapsi Unpad, Dr. Zainal Abidin, M.Si. As the opening speaker, Zainal stated that this public lecture has been held regularly during the last four years. He also mentioned that only a year ago, Fapsi Unpad had started to invite experts to attend this public lecture, one of them being an international policy expert. Furthermore, Nadjib presented material on the conflict between Israel and Palestine from the perspective of political psychology and historical accounts. He emphasized that currently, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is an overwhelming humanitarian problem and should not be considered a trivial matter. The ambassador, who is also a member of the Universitas Padjadjaran Board of Trustees, explained that analyzing conflicts and promoting peace through the study of identities can be carried out from the perspective of political psychology, which focuses on the impact of leadership and personality of key figures on decision-making. Moreover, the analysis can also be conducted through the key personality approach in political psychology. Nadjib explained that political psychology discusses the understanding of political behavior, ranging from familiar political behavior to seemingly incomprehensible political behavior. In political psychology, every nation has a distinct identity and is not limited to individuals. The nation’s identity is most evident in the key figures or leaders of a nation, although the nation’s character is shown by the whole society. Nadjib explained that these key figures and leaders will provide a “mass identity” such as the personality of many people.  There is also a shared belief about a particular nation having distinctive personality traits, which can also be referred to as national character or national stereotypes, or even national identity. “National stereotypes are portrayals of a society’s character,” Nadjib added. The approach used when analyzing conflict is collective politicized identity. Collective politicized identity is a political psychology approach that is connected to three concepts, namely collective identity (giving a label to something), power struggle (the struggle for power), and the complexity of the social and human context that is more extensive than just a power struggle. “There are many theories of political psychology that we can incorporate to approach this problem (the Israeli-Palestinian conflict). But I want to us to knock on our own hearts and see that this is an unimaginable human problem. An unforgettable human tragedy is happening right now in front of our eyes,” Nadjib explained. Psychological reconciliation is also important in resolving a conflict.  The psychological reconciliation aspect requires a change in the ethos of conflict. He explains that we have to take hold of the essence of the conflict and look into the core of what is really going on. Furthermore, Nadjib explained that in psychological reconciliation, one also needs to respect the beliefs of the community, where the beliefs of the group must be dissected and examined thoroughly. Nadjib also noted that establishing an ethos of peace is also necessary by replacing deep-rooted conflicts with an ethos of peace. Additionally, he pointed out that the realization of peace and conflict resolution is a major contribution of political psychology and can be done through the application of a culture of objective-based dialogue, appropriate and thoughtful approaches to all forms of polarization, mitigating collective efforts to address root causes, and sensitizing the leaders of conflicting groups. Caring for the Inclusiveness of Education for Persons with Disabilities, Unpad Launches EmpowerID Program

Jatinangor, West Java – Education should be a privilege that every individual is entitled to in life. People with disabilities are no exception.  In line with the realization of educational inclusiveness, Universitas Padjadjaran collaborates with Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) in establishing a program entitled “Enhancing Disability-Inclusive Education in Indonesian Universities (EmpowerID)”. The program was attended by two GCU academic staff, Dr. Katie Thomson and Ms. Lisa Forrest at Unpad Jatinangor Campus on April 21-26.  Prior to the visit from two GCU staff, Universitas Padjadjaran has visited Glasgow Caledonian University last March. This aims to increase capacity and learning in efforts to serve students and staff with disabilities through staff and facilities at the University.  The visit to Universitas Padjadjaran was organized in the form of a workshop with relevant stakeholders at Universitas Padjadjaran, such as the disability services task force, students with disabilities, the learning support office, and the chairpersons of study programs.  Director of Education and Internationalization of Universitas Padjadjaran, Mohamad Fahmi, S.E., M.T., Ph.D., explains that the EmpowerID program is intended as a foundation for the establishment of a permanent and adequate disability service unit within Unpad. The goal of this program is to create a friendly and flexible academic environment for students with disabilities. “EmpowerID is not only about making our campus more flexible, but also about strengthening the values of equality, justice, and respect in our community. This initiative is proof of our commitment to ensuring that every student has the same opportunity to succeed,” Fahmi said.  The main area that EmpowerID focuses on is the integration of assistive technology to help students with disabilities in teaching and learning activities, such as software that helps with visual and auditory activities. On the other hand, programs are also needed for improving the academic success performance and social integration of students with disabilities, coaching staff and students regarding disability sensitivity, and vigorous promoting of understanding and interacting in the campus environment. In addition to the Director of Education and Internationalization of Universitas Padjadjaran, the visit of two GCU Disability Service staff was also warmly welcomed by the Head of the Unpad Disability Service Task Force, Dr. Eng. H. Boy Yoseph Cahya Sunan Sakti Syah Alam, ST, MT. The growing awareness of inclusion within Universitas Padjadjaran is an important milestone to create an inclusive learning environment. We are committed to empowering individuals with disabilities, ensuring equal access to education, career opportunities, access to healthcare, and full participation in community life,” says Boy.  A bright and useful future for society is always the dream of every human being. Jatinangor, April 19, 2024 — A total of 83 Padjadjaran University students have been selected to be awarded the Smart Scholarship 2024 from the Zakat Collection Unit (UPZ) of Baznas Unpad. The scholarship was symbolically presented in Bale Rumawat Park, Jalan Dipati Ukur No.35, Bandung, Tuesday (16/4). Dr. Hazbini states that this scholarship is granted to Unpad students, especially for underprivileged students, in the form of financial support for living expenses and pocket money, as well as UKT or tuition fee assistance for one semester. Unpad Increases the Number of Female Urology Doctors

Bandung, West Java – Women’s access to education and employment often remains a problem. This has led to various efforts to diminish the discrimination. This has been demonstrated by several universities in Indonesia, one of which is Universitas Padjadjaran in the field of urology. Historically, urology has been a male-dominated field. This is proven by the higher rate of male urology doctors compared to women in places around the world. However, this gap is narrowing over time. One of the areas where the disparity is decreasing is West Java, as many women are enrolling and contributing to the urology residency program, especially at Universitas Padjadjaran. However, this was not something that could be achieved in an instant and has rather took a long time to achieve. The erasure of discrimination in gender is developing rapidly in various regions of developing countries including in Indonesia. Indonesia currently has five urology centers including hubs in Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Padjadjaran, Universitas Brawijaya, Universitas Airlangga, and Universitas Gadjah Mada. Currently, there are 653 urologists in Indonesia listed at the beginning of 2024. Universitas Padjadjaran’s team includes 10 female urology residents out of the 63 residents. The figures achieved are in line with the urology residency program conducted by Universitas Padjadjaran, particularly Hasan Sadikin Academic Medical Center in Bandung. Since its opening in 2007, the urology department of Universitas Padjadjaran has admitted at least 1 female resident. Even more so, this number continues to grow. The low participation rate of women and men in urology is not because they are not admitted, but rather because they do not apply for the field. On the one hand, the background experiences of female and male residents do not differ much in terms of education and the number of gap years (the period from their graduation as a medical doctor to being accepted into a residency program). The difference is shown in the publication experience, which is dominated by female medical students. The exposure to education as a career choice should not only be directed to a particular gender. Introducing the field of urology to women to pursue their careers is one way to promote gender equality in the field of science. Support and assistance are important factors in career advancement and protection for women who want to enter the field. Writer: Maria Imanuella Dewi SekartajiTranslator: Dhia Anaulva Putri

Unpad Accepts 2,636 New Student Candidates Through Merit-Based National Selection System

Jatinangor, March 26, 2024 – The announcement of the Merit-Based National Selection System (SNBP) results will be opened on Tuesday (26/3) at 15.00 WIB on the SNBP 2024 announcement page or on the mirror page https://snbp.unpad.ac.id/. Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs of Universitas Padjadjaran, Prof. Arief S. Kartasasmita states that this year Unpad has admitted 2,636 new student candidates through SNBP. The number of SNBP applicants to Unpad has reached 31,329 people, which puts Unpad as the state university with the fifth highest number of applicants in Indonesia. He also mentions that the number of students accepted in the SNBP pathway is in accordance with the quota set in advance. Unpad has increased the quota for new student candidates in the SNBP pathway this year. Prof. Arief explains that the increase in the number of quotas was decided with the intention of attracting the best and brightest students from all over Indonesia. The program is executed through four Unpad’s partiality policies, namely allocations for participants with disabilities, high achieving students who live in outer, remote, and disadvantaged areas (3T); exceptional students from families who have never pursued higher education; and students whose schools are not yet represented in Unpad. Through these four policies, potential new students admitted to Unpad through the SNBP pathways are students from various provinces in Indonesia. Prof. Arief elaborates that  there were many participants from outside Java who applied for SNBP to Unpad this year. He states that this proves that many high-achieving and talented students from all over Indonesia are eager to enroll in Unpad. In addition, the number of school origins accepted in Unpad has doubled. Prof. Arief notes that the number of schools admitted to Unpad last year was around 700, whereas it has increased this year to more than 1,000 schools. This indicates a higher accessibility coverage compared to the previous year. Furthermore, Prof. Arief explained that potential students who have been accepted in SNBP, may not apply to the SNBT pathway or the Independent path. However, Prof. Arief said that it is still expected that there will still be candidates from the SNBP pathway who do not re-register for various reasons. “In the SNBP pathway implemented last year, almost 90 percent of prospective students re-registered. It is possible that this year there will still be students who do not re-register as they have other priorities to pursue. However, we hope that 99% of potential students this year can re-register,” he explains. If prospective students decide not to enroll through the SNBP pathway, this can potentially impact the school’s ranking in the coming year. Responding to this, Prof. Arief said that if prospective students are given the opportunity, it must be seized as best as possible, namely by re-registering, since there must be other students who have not been accepted and would trade positions with those who have. Prof. Arief also points out that there is no follow-up acceptance announcement for the SNBP pathway. Candidates are also required to access registration information through Unpad’s official website. “Follow the procedures specified in the registration announcement later when registering. Do not be fooled by parties who try to convince you that they can help you to transfer (to another university). Take advantage of this opportunity by registering,” concludes Prof. Arief. Conducting Dental Checkups for “Santri” Students, FKG and RGSM Unpad Collaborate with Unilever Indonesia

Jatinangor, March 22, 2024 — To commemorate World Oral Health Day (WOHD) on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, the Faculty of Dentistry or FKG “Fakultas Kedokteran Gigi”, Rumah Sakit Gigi dan Mulut Universitas Padjadjaran, and Unilever Indonesia worked together to conduct free dental checkups for fifty santri (Islamic boarding school students) from Rumah Tahfiz Qur’an Anak Bandung in the ballroom of Masjid Agung Trans Studio Bandung. In this activity, FKG Unpad involved 18 residents, 20 medical fellowship students, and 15 lecturers as supervisors from all departments for dental checkups and providing education for the santri.  This collaborative activity in commemoration of WOHD is a yearly routine. Other than dental checkups, this event also provided education and a Talk Show for attendants about maintaining dental and oral health. The Talk Show had drg. Usman Sumantri, M.Sc. (as chair of PB PDGI), Dr. drg. Julita Hendrartini, M.Kes,AAK.(as chair of ARSGMPI), Prof. Suryono, drg.,SH.,MM.,Ph.D. (as Chair of ADOKGI), Ustaz Dr. Zulkarnain Muhammad Ali, SE., MSi., Ph.D, and Citra Kirana as a celebrity.  The chair of the event, Dr. Indra Mustika Setia Pribadi, drg.,Sp.Perio.,Subsp.MP(K)., says that this year, this event is held coincidentally with the month of Ramadan, where usually every year, this event is held full day. Indra also says that the event had a Talk Show with Ustaz who spoke about the fatwa on dental care during Ramadan fasting. To ensure that patients are not hesitant in their dental care during fasting, the fatwa of MUI (Majelis Ulama Indonesia) is explained in detail. Other than that, education about dental and oral maintenance as well as the use of flouride application was also delivered. In relation to this, Indra adds that education about fluoride application was given to the santri companions so they could use it while they were not fasting. The aim of this activity is to encourage children to consult with dentists routinely and to keep up good habits of maintaining their mouths and teeth for life. Besides that, education on dental health will be increased in traditional and boarding schools to support Indonesia’s Ministry of Health’s health transformation in their preventive promotive pillar.  “With the santri getting used to facing their dentists, we hope that in the future, they are no longer afraid of going to the dentist. The same goes for the adults. By being provided education, they will have an understanding that going to dentists is not only for tooth extraction or filling but also for fluoride application on children so they become more immune from cavities. This will make their teeth healthier in the long run and less prone to cavities,” says Indra. In this campaign, FKG Unpad, RGSM Unpad, and Unilever Indonesia worked together to increase the quality of dental and oral education of the community as part of the manifestation of the Tridhama of higher education, that is community service for society. “We can inform that maintaining dental hygiene has to start from a young age to avoid more severe cases, not when we are already adults,” Indra says. This collaborative activity was fully supported by the Faculty of Cultural Sciences and other faculties at Universitas Padjadjaran.   Writer: Yohanes William IvakdalamTranslator: Jauza Maryam Mumtazah
