Energy Consumption Reduction Plan at FIB Unpad as A Step Toward Sustainability

Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) Universitas Padjadjaran is undertaking an important initiative to reduce energy consumption and support environmental sustainability. In this effort, FIB Unpad has designed several strategic steps to improve energy efficiency across campus facilities. Daman Yusup, M.M., Human Resources and Infrastructure Manager of FIB Unpad, said that there are at least four steps that his team will take regarding this issue. First, FIB Unpad will conduct a comprehensive energy audit. This audit aims to identify areas that require improvement and find effective solutions to reduce energy consumption. Daman added that FIB will start replacing conventional lights with LED lights. LED lights, known for their energy efficiency and longevity, will reduce energy consumption as well as maintenance costs. In addition to the lamp replacement, secondly, FIB Unpad will also implement an automatic lighting system. This system uses motion sensors and timers to ensure lighting is only active when needed, thus reducing energy wastage. Utilization of natural light from windows and skylights will also be enhanced, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and creating a healthier and more pleasant environment. Third, the management of the air conditioning (AC) system will also be optimized. The AC temperature will be set at an optimal level to avoid excessive energy use. In addition, AC filters will be cleaned regularly, and natural ventilation will be used to reduce the need for additional cooling. By implementing these actions, FIB Unpad aims to lower operational costs and contribute to environmental sustainability efforts. This initiative reflects the faculty’s commitment to creating a more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient campus environment and setting an example for other institutions in implementing good sustainability practices.  Writer: Gilang JanuarsyahTranslator: Firda Khoirunnisa

Unpad Center for Environmental Communication Studies Conducts Training for Snake Handling

Jatinangor, February 26, 2023 – The Center for Environmental Communication Studies, Faculty of Communication Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran (Fikom Unpad) together with the Sioux Indonesia Foundation organized “Snake Handling Training” which was attended by a number of students and campus security personnel at the Fikom Unpad campus, Jatinangor, on Saturday (25/03). This activity was supported by various parties and faculties, one of which was the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB). The Head of the Center for Environmental Communication Studies of Fikom Unpad, Dr. Uud Wahyudin, said that the target participants in this activity were security personnel, with the hope that the security team would not only solely focus on carrying out community security activities on campus, but also handle potentially dangerous animals, especially snakes. Fikom Unpad lecturer and animal activist, Dr. Herlina Agustin, explained that many people are usually confused about what to do first when they encounter a snake. Therefore, this training was held to address similar situations and ensure the safety of the Unpad community. She explains that snakes are like “neighbors that can be spotted anywhere”. Sometimes many people do not know how to deal with snakes, so they make harsh decisions by killing them. When encountering a snake, the first person people usually contact or turn to is the security guard. Therefore, this training program is aimed at educating the security guards so that they are able to professionally handle the snakes in order to protect the public and the animals themselves without having to kill them. He also added that in cases when a snake has attacked you, the first step is to calm down and immediately clean yourself with running water while making sure to do three important things, namely pressing, holding, and raising the bitten body part to prevent it from being contaminated by bacteria. After that, you should immediately treat the injured body part so that it does not lead to infection. Afterwards, the snake will either be returned to its natural habitat or in some cases, be kept in the laboratory as objects of future student research. “We hope that we as humans can coexist with animals so that the existing ecosystem is well-maintained,” Herlina concluded. Unpad Manglayang Trail Running Invites the Community to Reforestation

Jatinangor, West Java – Universitas Padjadjaran holds another Unpad Manglayang Trail Running (Unpad MTR) event, this time executed offline or on site. In the previous year, the event was held in a hybrid approach with 150 on-site runners and 500 virtual runners. Unpad MTR, held in Jatinangor, Sumedang, was celebrated by runners from various cities and provinces. The opening commenced at 05.00 am by releasing the 42K running category (Trail Marathon). Furthermore, the 21K category (Half Trail Marathon) at 05.30, the 10K category (Fun Trail) at 05.45, and the last category 5K (Family Trail) at 06.00. Unpad MTR participants are divided into four categories with a total of 100 runners in the 42K category, 150 runners in the 21K category, 150 10K runners, and 200 runners in the 5K category. Each participant is appointed through the provision of mandatory gears, although there are a number of differences based on the level of difficulty. “Certainly in the 42K and 21K categories the mandatory gears have more items compared to the 10K and 5K categories, considering that the running terrain is heavier,” said the Race Director of Unpad Manglayang Trail Running. Technically, the cut off time applied is 7 hours for the 42K running category, 6 hours for the 21K category, 2 hours for the 10K category, and 1.5 hours for the 5K category. Therefore, it is expected that the event officially closes at 05.00 pm. The route chosen for the Unpad MTR is not much different from last year, which is from Unpad Jatinangor Campus to Batu Beureum through Kiara Payung Campground. Runners who choose the marathon and half marathon route have to run up to 1818 meters above sea level. This is a challenge for the runners, as the running terrain on Mount Manglayang sparks adrenaline. This program also invites Palawa Unpad members to be part of the organizers of the activity. Furthermore, Unpad MRT has received two ITRA points in the 42K category and one 21K point. In order to meet ITRA requirements, the Unpad MTR committee discarded one post of ‘hydration checkpoint’ in the 42K and 21K categories. “No need to worry as this reduction has been well calculated so that it does not negatively impact the participants,” Safitra assures. The advantage of ITRA points obtained by runners, namely for participants who finish according to the cut off time will get points to access a number of trail races abroad that are included as members of ITRA. In addition to running, the concept of the Unpad MRT event also promotes the enthusiasm for protecting the environment through reforestation of the area. This is evident by the consistent implementation of the concept through the “1 Runner 1 Tree” activity. As the number of runners reached 600 people, 600 trees were planted in the forest area of Mount Manglayang, especially on the slopes that are the source of the local economy. Not only runners, the event also involved residents and farmer groups to monitor the growth and development of the planted trees. “We utilize technology by developing an application for the program,” says the Chairman of the Unpad MTR Committee, Jaston Pangaribuan. Fruit trees are chosen to be mass-planted as it is expected to bring economic benefits to the surrounding population. Some of the trees include avocado and mangosteen trees. As the event is still in the transition period after the covid pandemic, the Unpad MRT committee has been collaborating with IdeaRun for race management. Through this, the race management team enforced high standards in the implementation of the event, one of which was the latest health protocol standards. “Our team has hiked back and forth to the highest peak of Mount Manglayang and is very happy with the course. Hopefully the runners will be even more excited later with our efforts to improve the facilities on the track,” Safrita wishes. Unpad MRT is supported by a number of parties, one of them being IKA Unpad. In addition, there are also sponsors from PT Timah, Bank Mandiri, Telkomsel, Medco Foundation, Bumi Rantau Energi, Bank Indonesia, Strive, Salomon, BPJS Employment, Kimia Farma, Crystalline, and Netflix.id. Through the running activities together with the community, it is anticipated that similar events will be able to become a bridge between higher education institutions and the public. Hence, this can boost efforts to achieve the goal of sustainable cities and residential areas. Writer: Maria Imanuella Dewi SekartajiTranslator: Dhia Anaulva Putri

Energy Efficiency at Universitas Padjadjaran: Average Electricity Usage per Person

Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad) is working to improve energy efficiency across campus. Understanding how much electricity is used per person on campus is important for monitoring and managing energy consumption. By 2023, Unpad’s total electricity usage is estimated to reach 12,000,000 kWh. This electricity usage covers many facilities, including classrooms, laboratories, offices, and libraries. With a campus population of approximately 36,958 people, we can calculate the average electricity usage per person. Using this data, the total electricity usage per person at Unpad is 325 kWh. This means that each individual on campus if divided equally, used approximately 325 kWh of electricity during the period. This number provides a clear picture of electricity consumption at the individual level. It is important to understand this number given that it helps Unpad in designing strategies to reduce energy consumption. By knowing the average electricity usage, the university will be able to more effectively identify areas that need improvement, design energy efficiency measures, and support sustainability efforts on campus. Through this approach, Unpad is not only trying to reduce operational costs, but is also committed to reducing the environmental impact of energy consumption. This is part of a larger effort to create a more environmentally friendly and sustainable campus. Writer: Gilang JanuarsyahTranslator: Firda Khoirunnisa

“Smart Watering” as a Smart Hydroponic Device for Lecturers and Students of FTIP Unpad

Jatinangor, West Java – The research team of the Faculty of Agricultural Industrial Technology (FTIP) Universitas Padjadjaran has developed a hydroponic device using the principle of the self-watering system without using electrical energy.  FTIP Unpad lecturer Dr. Sophia Dwiratna Nur Perwitasari, M.T., together with five students: Diki Abdulah, Chaerul Amin, Shilvya Dewi Agustien, Annisa Nurdiah, and Salma Waffiyah developed a device called “Smart Watering”. This device is a downstream product of the 2018-2019 Higher Education Excellence Basic Research chaired by Dr. Sophia. Then, this product was proposed in a business competition facilitated by the Unpad Student Pre-Startup Innovation Grant (HIPSMU).   Diki reveals that the use of electricity in hydroponics is quite high, especially the use of electricity for water management.  Therefore, “Smart Watering” is here to answer the problem. In addition, Diki also explains that “Smart Watering” utilizes gravity, the Archimedes principle, and capillarity, and provides results that are as good as systems that use electrical energy for irrigation.  The use of “Smart Watering” is ensured to increase efficiency in the use of water and nutrients, and of course, to save electricity. In addition, this product can be used for various types of plants and hydroponic methods, such as substrate and water culture. “We apply a self-watering system, where 100% of the water and nutrients will be absorbed by the plants. We minimize the evaporation process from the growing media,” explains Diki. This product uses various components consisting of reservoirs, buckets, valves, and irrigation channels. Regarding usage, the reservoir is first filled with water and nutrients, then when the faucet is opened, the water and nutrients will enter each valve in the container, where the valve will regulate the irrigation.  “Each bucket will be irrigated by a valve according to the needs of the plants,” adds Diki.  Thus, users do not need to water every day. The process of watering plants only takes once a week or according to the plant’s growth phase.  Diki and his team have the principle of “farming without hassle”, where the use of “Smart Watering” is considered practical, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly. In other words, they strive to create a product that is easy to use with optimal results.  Regarding the physical characteristics of the product, one installation of the product measures about 150×60 cm, and is estimated to be able to be used for 70 holes of leafy green plants and 10 fruit plants. In response to this, Diki said that this product can be utilized on the terraces of houses or yards. In addition, the product is easy to pack, and installation is simple.  Since September 2020, this product has been marketed and used in various regions. Diki and his team hope that people (especially those living in urban areas) will find it easy to grow crops in their own yards with this product. They also hope that the product can contribute in improving Indonesia’s food security.  “We really hope that this product can create jobs for many people because we will also produce it on a larger scale,” concludes Diki.
