Ilmu Budaya / September 7, 2025

The Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Universitas Padjadjaran, proudly celebrates the achievement of Dr. Ida Farida Sachmadi, M.Hum., a lecturer from the English Studies Program, whose article has been successfully published in the prestigious journal International Research in Children’s Literature. The article, titled “Stigmatisation, Marginalisation, and Agency in Keluarga Cemara, an Indonesian Young Adult Series”, is co-authored with Prof. Aquarini Priyatna, M.A., M.Hum., Ph.D. from the English Studies Program and Dr. Lina Meilinawati Rahayu, M.Hum. from the Indonesian Literature Program.

This study examines how the popular young adult series Keluarga Cemara by Arswendo Atmowiloto explores issues of stigmatisation, marginalisation, and agency within Indonesian society. The narrative focuses on a petite-bourgeois family that experiences a dramatic shift from wealth to poverty. Despite losing their economic capital, the family preserves its cultural identity and values while navigating new social realities. The article highlights how wealthy characters in the series stigmatise and marginalise those living in poverty, while the main family resists complete exclusion by asserting their cultural capital and negotiating their position within the petite-bourgeois class. Through this nuanced analysis, the study sheds light on the complex interplay of class, power relations, and cultural resistance as represented in the text.

The authors argue that Keluarga Cemara provides an open textual space that encourages young adult readers to critically question the social structures and inequalities within their environment. By combining literary analysis with sociocultural perspectives, the article makes a significant contribution to the study of Indonesian literature, class dynamics, and young adult narratives in global academic discourse.
This international publication demonstrates FIB’s strong commitment to advancing impactful research that connects local literary traditions with international scholarship. It also highlights the dedication of FIB scholars in promoting Indonesian literature on the global stage and inspiring future studies in the fields of children’s and young adult literature.

Congratulations to Dr. Ida Farida Sachmadi, M.Hum., Prof. Aquarini Priyatna, M.A., M.Hum., Ph.D., and Dr. Lina Meilinawati Rahayu, M.Hum. for this remarkable achievement that continues to elevate the academic reputation of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran.
